Erfahrungen mit dem Service von Host Europe
Ein kleines Beispiel, wie man Kunden langfristig behält und zufrieden macht:
Auf meinem Server bei Host Europe laufen viele verschiedene Webseiten (darunter auch einige von Kunden) sowie einige Facebook Apps. Vor knapp 2 Wochen war die Erreichbarkeit aufgrund eines Defekts für ca. 12 Stunden schwer gestört bis gar nicht mehr möglich. Kurzerhand hatte ich mir überlegt, den Hoster zu wechseln. Dabei ist mir aufgefallen, dass mein Produkt bei Host Europe eine Mindestvertragslaufzeit von 12 Monaten hat, die gerade erst erneut verlängert wurde.
Daraufhin habe ich den Support angeschrieben, die mich ziemlich überraschten. Sie boten mir an, eine Reduzierung der Mindestvertragslaufzeit auf einen (!) Monat zu beantragen. Einen Tag später war mein Vertrag umgeschrieben und ich habe nun keine Lust mehr zu einem anderen Anbieter zu wechseln, auch wenn ich jetzt zu jedem Monatsende kündigen könnte.
Aus diesem Grund bin ich mit meinem iPhone auch bei O2. Hier kann ich wählen ob ich einen Vertrag mit oder ohne Laufzeit möchte. Kunden, die nicht gegängelt oder an Verträge gefesselt werden, bleiben länger und lieber. Mehrere Unternehmen haben das noch nicht begriffen.

37,04 Millionen iPhones, 15,43 Millionen iPads, 5,2 Millionen Macs und 15,4 Millionen iPods.
Apple now has $97 billion in cash, short- and long-term securities on hand.

We need an exit from Google
Dave Winer:
I did an image search the other day and it made me stand up and pace. They were showing me posts on Google Plus with pictures from people they know I know because I email with them in Gmail. I don’t want to go there. I want search to be search and just that. I want the same search everyone else gets unless I specifically ask it to search images from people I know who are using Google-Plus. There are times I don’t want to be marketed to. Like when I’m using image search. That’s almost always part of creative work. I will do the driving Google. Thanks.

Mein Provider Host Europe hat seit gestern Abend leider mit Störungen und Ausfällen zu kämpfen, weswegen dieses Blog nur zum Teil oder gar nicht erreichbar ist.
Update:
Das Problem wurde behoben und die Seite ist nun wieder uneingeschränkt erreichbar.

Instagram: Android-Version und Werbeanzeigen
Eine Android-Version von Instagram wird derzeit von zwei Entwicklern programmiert und dürfte nicht mehr allzu lange auf sich warten lassen. Außerdem hat sich Instagram-Gründer Kevin Systrom klar hinsichtlich eines Geschäftsmodells positioniert:
“Obviously, we didn’t start a business to not make money,” he said. “Our focus now is on growing the network. You really need to build up the network, or no advertisers care.”
Ich habe ein ungutes Gefühl. Ich befürchte, dass Instagram sowohl durch In-App-Ads als auch Android an seinem Charme verlieren wird. Marco Arment bringt es auf den Punkt:
I’d guess that Instagram could have charged a few bucks for their app from the start, made us their customers, budgeted carefully, and avoided VC funding and advertising. But they chose the free-now-ads-later model, and it appears to be working very well.

WD-40 für den iPhone Home-Button
Ich nutze WD-40 ja hauptsächlich für meine alte Vespa PX, aber Khoi Vinh hat herausgefunden, dass sich damit auch unzuverlässige iPhone Home-Buttons wieder in einen nahezu neuen Zustand versetzen lassen:
In my experience, on not just my own iPhone 4 but also on my girlfriend’s, WD-40 restores the responsiveness of the iPhone’s home button to basically like-new condition. I just sprayed a little bit of WD-40 directly on the button, then pressed the button rapidly a few dozen times, tested its responsiveness afterwards, then repeated the process two or three times until it began to improve. Then I used the phone for a day or two to see how well the button did in actual use; I found that after a few days the problem ebbed back slightly, at which point I applied more WD-40. After the second or third application, the responsiveness remained indefinitely.
Er hat übrigens auch so seine Zweifel, dass die zum Teil trägen Home-Buttons auf die Software zurückzuführen sind:
I was surprised to discover from a friend that Apple technicians diagnosed this problem on her phone as software related, which struck me as counter-inuitive, as it seemed to me to be very much a hardware problem.
In jedem Fall einen Versuch wert.

Elgato Thunderbolt SSD
Elgato steigt wieder ins Speichergeschäft ein und liefert eine Thunderbolt SSD mit Transferraten von bis zu 270 MB/s, also fast 8 mal schneller als USB 2.0. Die Platte ist im Februar erhältlich und soll ab 400 EUR kosten.
Es deutet alles darauf hin, dass Thunderbolt 2012 richtig durchstarten wird.
