Font Hipsters

John Gruber:

We criticize Android for being poorly designed because it’s poorly designed. We favor iOS because it’s better designed. That’s it.

Dem ist nichts hinzuzufügen.

Apple’s Next Big Thing Already Here: Siri More Than Speech Recognition, Analyst Asserts

Forbes:

Siri is unique because it meshes voice recognition capabilities with both sophisticated artificial intelligence capabilities and tight integration with the phone’s other software — such as its calendar and address book — and its GPS system. That allows the software to not just recognize a spoken command, but react differently based on where a user is and who the user knows, ask for clarification, and follow a long string of related commands. “Quite simply, we have not seen a demonstration of comparable AI in any other consumer system,” Cross writes.

The iPhone 4S Feels New, Even If It Looks Old

Bits, NYTimes:

A letdown, after months of hype that Apple doesn’t feed, but doesn’t quell either, isn’t unusual with Apple product introductions. It happened after several phone iterations and even with the iPad. (Remember the antenna that was to doom the company or the misnaming of the tablet?) All those devices have gone on to sell extremely well.

Volker Weber makes another good point. I’m sure Apple made a clever move and I’m excited to preorder my 4S on friday. And thanks to Siri, you can now tell your phone to “remind you to call someone when you leave the office, find a reservation for a restaurant and text message or call people by name”. I’m very excited.

Although some may be happy with the new iPhone’s substantial internal hardware boosts, the new device’s biggest selling point is actually a software feature called Assistant. As we first revealed , Assistant is Apple’s Siri-inspired, system-wide voice navigation system. It so far appears that iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS users will be left out in the fun, unfortunately, because the feature requires the A5 CPU and additional RAM.

Ich könnte mir gut vorstellen, dass das die erste Sprachbedienung sein wird, die auch funktioniert und nutzbar ist. Erfahrungsgemäß wirft Apple keine unfertigen Produkte auf den Markt. Man darf gespannt sein.

Google Music web app for iOS

Google Music, iPhone 4

A fantastic working and looking Google Music web app has just been released for iOS. Open http://music.google.com in Mobile Safari and off you go. It even works when you hide Safari and use other apps. Google Music has been of my favourite and most used web apps in the last months.

(I have 2 invites for Music beta to give away. Please mail me your email address associated with your Google Account, if you’re interested. It works in Germany.)

Marco Arment: Speculation on the iPhone 5 and iPad HD rumors

Marco Arment does a good job speculating what Apple could release in the coming fall:

I do not believe that they’ll change the screen size to conserve cost or physical size. A screen-size change would incur too large of a cost in software and the app ecosystem.

Hopefully he’s right, as I don’t like to carry a 4″+ phone in my pocket. It’s just too big.

He also says that there won’t be a new iPad. Apple said that 2011 would be the year of the iPad 2, so it wouldn’t make much sense releasing a new one, also because “Apple is still having trouble keeping up with demand for the iPad 2″.
